Practical Field Support From Someone Who Knows the Field
Sometimes you do not need a large consultancy or a local office. You may simply need someone who can go into the field, speak with people, collect information, check what is happening on the ground, and report back clearly.
My professional background includes field research, monitoring and evaluation, digital data collection, field supervision and data quality management. I have worked on research and development projects involving communities, households, health programmes, agriculture, livelihoods and other areas.
Because of this experience, field research and data collection are not just an additional service I offer. They are among the areas where I have the most practical experience.
How I Can Help
Field Research and Household Surveys
I can support household surveys, community surveys and other field research activities in Uganda. This can include planning field activities, identifying local contacts, coordinating field teams and making sure the required information is collected properly.
Digital Data Collection
I have experience using several digital data collection platforms, including KoboCollect, ODK, SurveyCTO, CommCare, ONA, TaroWorks and Google Forms.
I can support the setup and implementation of digital data collection activities, as well as field teams using these tools.
Data Quality Assurance and Verification
Good data starts in the field. I can help check whether information has been collected correctly, identify missing or inconsistent information and follow up on issues with field teams.
Where necessary, I can also support field verification and spot checks to improve the quality of the final dataset.
Field Supervision
I can supervise field teams, monitor progress, follow up on daily targets and help address challenges that come up during fieldwork.
This can include checking team performance, supporting communication between field teams and project management, and making sure activities remain on schedule.
Monitoring and Evaluation
My background in monitoring and evaluation allows me to support monitoring activities, programme assessments, data collection and reporting.
I can also support organisations that need temporary field capacity for specific M&E activities.
Stakeholder and Key Informant Interviews
I can support Key Informant Interviews, stakeholder interviews and other forms of qualitative fieldwork.
This can involve identifying relevant people, arranging interviews, conducting interviews based on approved tools and documenting the information collected.
Site Visits and Field Assessments
Sometimes information needs to be verified in person. I can support site visits, field assessments and verification exercises where organisations need someone on the ground.
This can be useful when you need to confirm information before making a decision or preparing a report.
Community Mobilisation and Engagement
I have experience working directly with communities and local stakeholders. Therefore, I can also support community mobilisation, introductions and communication with local people during field activities.
This is particularly useful when a project needs someone who understands the local environment and can communicate effectively with communities.
Data Management and Reporting
I can support basic data management and reporting using tools such as Excel, Access, MySQL, SPSS and STATA.
Depending on the assignment, this may include data cleaning, checking, organisation, basic analysis and preparation of information for reporting.
What Types of Field Assignments Can I Support?
My field experience can support different types of assignments, including:
- Household surveys
- Community surveys
- Baseline studies
- Midline and endline studies
- Monitoring visits
- Field verification exercises
- Programme assessments
- Key Informant Interviews
- Stakeholder interviews
- Site assessments
- Market and local information gathering
- Community research
- Data quality checks
- Enumerator supervision
- Digital data collection
- Field team coordination
- Research support
The exact support depends on the project, location, timeframe and level of technical expertise required.
Who This Service Is For
This service can be useful for:
- Research organisations
- NGOs and development organisations
- Academic institutions and universities
- Monitoring and evaluation teams
- International organisations
- Companies conducting market or community research
- Consultants who need local field support
- Organisations conducting surveys and assessments
- Organisations that need temporary field presence in Uganda
For larger assignments, I can also help identify and coordinate suitable local professionals or field teams.
How It Works
1. Share What You Need
You explain the research, data collection or field activity you want to carry out. This can include the location, target population, type of information required and expected timeframe.
2. We Scope the Fieldwork
We look at what needs to be done, where it needs to happen and what kind of field support is required.
At this stage, we can also discuss the number of locations, respondents, field staff, tools and expected outputs.
3. The Fieldwork Begins
Once the assignment is agreed, the field activities can begin.
The field team collects the required information using the agreed tools and procedures. I can help coordinate the process and follow up on progress.
4. Data and Information Are Checked
As the work progresses, I can help identify missing information, inconsistencies and other data quality issues.
Where necessary, the team can follow up on specific cases before completing the assignment.
5. Results Are Delivered
Depending on the assignment, I may provide cleaned datasets, field reports, interview notes, verification findings or other agreed outputs.
An Example
For example, a research organisation may need to conduct a household survey in a district in Uganda but does not have a local team there.
I can help understand the field requirements, identify and coordinate local field staff, support training and digital data collection, monitor the work and carry out data quality checks.
The organisation can then receive the agreed field information and datasets for further analysis and reporting.
Why Local Field Experience Matters
Fieldwork can look straightforward from outside. However, conditions on the ground can be different from what is expected in a plan.
Distances between communities, local languages, availability of respondents, weather, transport, community expectations and local leadership can all affect field activities.
Having someone who understands the local environment can therefore make fieldwork easier to organise and manage.
My experience working directly with communities and field teams has given me practical knowledge of how these challenges can affect data collection.
Data Quality Starts in the Field
A good dataset depends on what happens before the data reaches the computer.
For this reason, I pay attention to issues such as whether the right respondents are reached, whether questions are understood correctly, whether forms are completed properly and whether field teams follow the agreed procedures.
Good supervision and regular checks can help identify problems early instead of discovering them after fieldwork has already ended.
Uganda and East Africa
Uganda is my main base, and most of my field experience comes from working in different parts of the country.
I also understand that organisations working in East Africa may sometimes need reliable local support when entering a new area.
Depending on the assignment, I can help with local research, field contacts, data collection coordination and other practical field requirements beyond Uganda by working with suitable local professionals and contacts.
Important Note
My role is focused on practical field research, data collection, field coordination and data quality support.
It does not replace specialist research design, scientific methodology, legal requirements, ethical approval or specialist technical expertise.
For sensitive, regulated, clinical or formal academic studies, the appropriate professionals, institutions and authorities should be involved.
