About Benjamin Okech | The Africa Insider
Your trusted person on the ground in Uganda and East Africa
Business. Research. Sourcing. Connections. Verification. Representation. Ground Support.
I’m Benjamin Okech, a Uganda-based professional working across business support, field research, market intelligence, sourcing, local verification, stakeholder engagement and field operations.
I help businesses, investors, researchers, organisations, buyers, travellers, media teams, delegations and individuals who need reliable information, local connections or practical support on the ground in Uganda and East Africa.
Sometimes the requirement is simple. You may need someone to visit a place, speak to a local contact, verify information, find a supplier, arrange a meeting or collect information from the field.
Other assignments are more involved. You may be entering the Ugandan market, conducting research, looking for local business partners, sourcing products, monitoring a project, organising a delegation or trying to understand how something works locally.
That is where Africa Insider comes in.
What Is Africa Insider?
Finding information about Africa is easier than ever. You can search online, read reports, contact companies and find businesses from almost anywhere in the world.
But online information does not always tell you what is actually happening on the ground.
Sometimes you need someone who can make a local call, visit a location, speak to people, check information, identify the right contact, arrange a meeting or follow up on something for you.
That is the idea behind Africa Insider.
I provide practical, local support for people and organisations that need someone they can contact on the ground in Uganda and, through my professional network, in other parts of East and Central Africa.
My role can range from research and market intelligence to local verification, sourcing, business connections, field assignments, travel coordination and local representation.
The work is different from one assignment to another, but the need is often the same:
You need someone reliable who understands the local environment and can help you move things forward.
What I Can Help You With
My work covers several areas depending on what a client needs.
Business Connections
I help businesses and organisations identify and connect with local companies, suppliers, professionals, partners and other relevant contacts in Uganda and the wider East African region.
Market and Ground Intelligence
I can help gather practical information about markets, businesses, products, prices, competitors, suppliers, locations and local operating conditions.
This can include desk research as well as information collected directly from the field.
Field Research
I support field research, interviews, surveys, site visits, community engagement, data collection and other research activities that require someone who understands the local environment.
Local Verification
When information needs to be checked on the ground, I can help with site visits, business checks, supplier checks, location verification and collection of supporting information.
Where legal, financial or other specialised professional verification is required, I work with the appropriate qualified professionals.
Sourcing and Supplier Support
I can help identify potential suppliers, producers, businesses and other sources in Uganda and East Africa.
The focus is on helping clients find and understand potential local sources before making further commercial decisions.
Local Representation
For organisations that do not have their own person in Uganda, I can provide practical local support such as attending meetings, visiting locations, following up with contacts, collecting information and coordinating activities.
Travel and Delegation Support
For visitors coming to Uganda or East Africa for business, research, events, meetings or other purposes, I can assist with local coordination, introductions, site visits, transport arrangements and other practical requirements.
Who I Work With
I work with different types of people and organisations, depending on the assignment.
Businesses
Companies exploring Uganda or East Africa may need local market information, business contacts, suppliers, partners or someone to help with activities on the ground.
Investors and Business Partners
Investors and potential partners may need local information before making decisions, including market research, business introductions, site visits and local verification.
Researchers and Organisations
Researchers, NGOs, development organisations and other institutions may need field researchers, local coordination, data collection, interviews, site visits, community engagement or field monitoring.
Buyers and Sourcing Clients
International and regional buyers may need help identifying potential suppliers, producers or businesses in Uganda and East Africa.
Media and Production Teams
Journalists, documentary teams, photographers and production companies may need local contacts, location support, interviews, research, transport coordination and other assistance while working in the region.
Delegations and Visiting Teams
Companies, organisations and professional groups visiting Uganda may need someone to coordinate meetings, introductions, site visits, local transport and other activities.
Travellers and Individuals
Travellers and individuals may also need someone who understands the local environment and can provide practical support, connections and customised assistance.
Why My Background Matters
My professional background brings together information technology, monitoring and evaluation, field research, data management, digital data collection, field supervision, community engagement and programme implementation.
I hold a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology from the Islamic University in Uganda and completed postgraduate studies in Monitoring and Evaluation at the Uganda Management Institute.
Over the years, my work has involved different types of field and research assignments across Uganda.
This has included:
- Field research and household surveys
- Monitoring and evaluation
- Digital data collection
- Data quality checks and verification
- Field supervision
- Community mobilisation and engagement
- Research coordination
- Stakeholder engagement
- Site visits and field assessments
- Programme monitoring and reporting
- Data management
- Information systems
- Training and supervision of field teams
- Local business and stakeholder engagement
My technical background also includes experience with digital data collection, research and information systems such as KoboCollect, ODK, SurveyCTO, CommCare, ONA, TaroWorks, Google Forms, Excel, SPSS, STATA, Uganda EMR and DHIS2/HMIS.
This combination is useful because local support is not only about knowing people.
It is also about knowing how to collect information, check it, organise it, understand it and communicate it clearly.
Uganda Is My Home Base
Uganda is my primary base and strongest area of direct experience.
Uganda is also well connected to the wider East African region, including Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
My professional, research, fieldwork and travel experience has taken me into different communities, districts, organisations and working environments across Uganda.
I have worked with field teams, communities, organisations, businesses and local stakeholders in different settings. This has given me practical experience with the realities of working outside the office, where plans sometimes change and getting something done requires local communication, follow-up and physical presence.
Uganda is therefore more than just the country listed on this website.
It is the place where much of my professional experience has been built and the base from which I have developed many of my regional connections.
Working Across East and Central Africa
My strongest professional connection is with Uganda and East Africa, while my professional network also extends into parts of Central Africa.
I have professional familiarity and working connections involving:
Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan.
I also have exposure to other African markets and networks through professional, research, business and travel engagements.
I do not present myself as an expert in every African country.
Africa is a large and diverse continent. Every country has its own systems, cultures, regulations, businesses and ways of working.
For assignments outside my direct experience, I work with appropriate local people, professionals, organisations and service providers depending on the location and requirements.
This allows Africa Insider to provide local support while recognising the importance of using people with the right knowledge for specialised work.
How I Work
I believe local support should be practical and straightforward.
I Start With the Actual Requirement
Every assignment is different. I first try to understand what the client needs, where the activity is required and what the intended outcome is.
I Verify Where Possible
Information found online is not always enough. Where appropriate, I help confirm information through direct communication, site visits, local contacts or field research.
I Use Local Knowledge
Some information is easier to understand when you speak to people who actually live and work in the area.
I Keep Communication Simple
Clients need to know what has been done, what has been found and what still needs attention.
I Know My Limits
I do not claim to be a lawyer, accountant, surveyor, immigration specialist or other licensed professional where I am not one.
When specialised expertise is required, I work with or refer clients to the appropriate professionals.
What Makes an Africa Insider Useful?
The value of having someone on the ground is not simply having another contact.
It is having someone who can help turn a remote requirement into something practical.
You may be sitting in London, Dubai, Nairobi, New York, Sydney or another part of the world and need something checked in Uganda.
You may need to know whether a supplier actually exists.
You may need someone to visit a project site.
You may need to find people who are difficult to reach from outside the country.
You may need someone to attend a meeting.
You may need local market information before entering a new market.
You may need help organising a visit.
Or you may simply need someone who can tell you what is happening locally.
That is the role I aim to play.
Beyond One Person: Building Africa Insider
Africa Insider is currently led by Benjamin Okech, with Uganda as the primary base.
For assignments outside Uganda, I work with professional contacts and local people depending on the location, nature and requirements of the assignment.
Over time, the goal is to build a reliable network of researchers, field professionals, guides, drivers, consultants, suppliers and specialists across Africa.
The idea is simple.
Instead of having to search for a different contact every time you need something done in another location, you can start with one point of contact who understands what you need and can help identify the appropriate local support.
That is the long-term vision for Africa Insider.
A practical network that helps people access information, people, businesses and local support across Africa.
More Than Information. Local Access.
The internet can tell you a lot about Africa.
But there are things that still require a person on the ground.
A phone call.
A site visit.
A local introduction.
A conversation.
A verification check.
A meeting.
A follow-up.
A person who can tell you what is happening beyond what is written online.
That is what I mean by being The Africa Insider.
Have Something You Need Done on the Ground?
If you are looking for market information, local research, supplier connections, business introductions, verification, field support, travel coordination or local representation in Uganda or East Africa, tell me what you need.
I will look at the requirement and let you know how I can help, or whether someone else would be better placed to handle it.
